I think it’s also worth pointing out the of the four marquee predictor ceremonies we currently have, the SAGs and Critics Choice didn’t exist and the Baftas then came after the Oscars so it’s not like there was a lot of data to go on. Is it solely because it was a comedic role and the others were more dramatic? I’m not sure I buy the idea that she was the sole American therefore she won because at the same ceremony Emma Thompson won Best Actress so the Academy clearly were open to rewarding Brits. I’ve always wondered why Tomei’s win was such a big shock.
